Spotify is rolling out Prompted Playlist, a new AI playlist creation tool for premium subscribers in the US and Canada. feature, which was Originally tested in New ZealandAllows users to create a playlist describing what they want to hear in their own words
A prompt playlist is generated An earlier AI playlist product, launched in 2024which allows for simple prompts like “focus on work with instrumental electronica” or “pump up with fun, upbeat and positive music”.
Instead, the new Prompted Playlist feature lets users explain in more detail, and in a conversational mode, what they want to hear.
In a demo to press, for example, Spotify showed a playlist created with a long prompt, which read “Find me an artist I haven’t heard yet, but might like, or an artist I’ve only heard a song or two from and introduce me to them. Create a playlist of songs that gives me an overview of their catalog so I can think of the songs I think I might know. The top five.”
Concepts behind new features, explained JJ ItalianoThe head of global music curation and discovery at Spotify makes it possible for anyone to create a playlist, even if they don’t know much about music curation or the right words to use.

“For most people, it’s not a part of their job. You don’t always have the time or energy to create the perfect playlist every time your mood changes, and that’s where Prompted Playlists come in,” said Italiano, whose team creates popular Spotify playlists like Today’s Top Hits, New Music Friday and Rap Caviar. “It gives the audience access to that creative process without needing to know the genre, or the year, or the language of the industry. You don’t need the right words. You just need your words.”
“If you can describe a feeling, you can create a playlist,” he added.
The AI behind the feature analyzes the world of music in real time, including “trends, charts, culture and history,” Spotify says, as well as a user’s entire listening history since joining the service.
Playlists are personalized to their creator by default, users can use the tool to help them break out of their normal listening habits and get different recommendations. That is, they can specifically say AI no to use their own listening history as a reference point, or they may introduce it to songs they have never heard before, as in the example above.

Prompts need not include any musical terminology. For example, users may want a playlist inspired by the weather or a favorite TV show.
Because prompts can be shared, the feature could lead to a new type of creator — one who creates AI prompts that others will want to try. Although the prompt itself will be the same, each user’s resulting playlist will be different, as it is personalized to their own tastes and listening history. They can then further modify that playlist, if they choose.

Spotify says Prompted Playlists is the “next evolution” of its previous AI Playlists feature. The new version is even more tuned to real-time music trends and culture, understands the full arc of a user’s listening behavior — not just what they’ve heard recently — and offers deeper control. However, the old AI playlist feature will not be turned off. Instead, the two products will exist side by side, which may lead to consumer confusion due to similarities.
The feature will have some usage limits as it is still in beta and may change over time. It is currently only available in English language.
The company did not say when Prompted Playlists will reach customers worldwide, noting that it wants to learn from these early markets first to inform future launches.
