Health Tips: The problem of chilblains becomes common due to increase in cold in winter. This happens when hands and feet that have been in the cold suddenly come in contact with heat, due to which the fingers start turning red or blue. According to Dr. Divya Dwivedi of Ghaziabad District MMG Hospital, it causes itching, swelling and burning sensation. For protection, keep hands and feet warm, wear gloves and socks, apply moisturizer and avoid direct exposure to high heat.

As the cold increases in the winter season, skin related problems also start appearing rapidly. A common but painful disease among these problems is chilblains. This problem occurs when the hands and feet suddenly come in contact with heat after being in the cold for a long time. In such a situation, the blood vessels of the skin react rapidly, due to which the fingers and toes start turning red or blue. Along with this, severe itching, burning and swelling is felt. In many cases, blisters or small wounds are also formed, which causes difficulty in walking and doing daily tasks.

Dr. Divya Dwivedi, dermatologist at District MMG Hospital, Ghaziabad, says that chilblains are mainly caused by cold winds and low temperatures. The blood vessels of the body shrink in cold. Especially in hands and feet. Due to this, blood circulation does not occur properly and the color of the skin starts changing. Due to this, the problem of swelling and itching arises. When itching is severe, people repeatedly scratch the skin, due to which the risk of wound formation increases.

According to the doctor, this problem is seen more in small children and elderly people, because their skin is more sensitive. However, anyone can face this problem if they are careless. The most important thing in winter is protection from cold. Keep hands, legs and open parts of the body covered and always keep them warm. One should wear gloves and socks while going out. It is beneficial to wear more than one socks in extreme cold.

Dr. Divya Dwivedi says that rubbing hands together in cold is also beneficial. This improves blood circulation and maintains heat. Do not let the skin remain dry, for this use moisturizer regularly. Many people warm their hands and feet directly with a heater or blower when they feel cold, but doing so should be avoided. Because sudden extreme heat can worsen the problem. If necessary, use a heater or heating pad for a limited time.

If the itching is severe and there is difficulty in wearing gloves or socks, then consult a doctor without any delay. Taking medicine on your own can increase the problem. Along with this, it is also important to take a good and nutritious diet in winter so that the body’s immunity remains intact.
