In today’s era, when people are constantly following new trends regarding fitness and weight loss, desi ghee has once again come into discussion. The special thing is that this time Desi Ghee is not being supported by any nutrition trend, but both celebrities and experts are supporting it. Desi ghee, which was once considered to increase weight, is now being called a health superfood.
During The Kapil Sharma Show, actress Aditi Rao Hydari openly admitted that she likes desi ghee very much. She said that Indian home remedies are the best and she herself consumes ghee. The show’s judge Archana Puran Singh also clearly said that desi ghee has been defamed unnecessarily. He believes that very few people understand that desi ghee does not increase weight, but if taken in the right quantity, it is beneficial for the body.
Taking this discussion further, Navjot Singh Sidhu linked desi ghee with starting the morning. He told that if the day is started with turmeric and desi ghee and after that nothing is eaten for some time, then the body first starts burning fat. On the contrary, if sweet tea or sugar is taken first thing in the morning, then the body starts demanding carbohydrates and fat again and again, due to which there is a risk of weight gain.
Science also seems to be fully behind these things of celebrities. According to Amreen Shaikh, Chief Dietitian of KIMS Hospitals, weight gain does not happen due to eating any one thing, but due to consuming excess calories and unbalanced diet. He says that if desi ghee is taken in limited quantity, it does not increase weight. On the contrary, it helps in feeling full and improves digestion.
The biggest reason for misunderstanding of desi ghee is consuming it in large quantities and with wrong food. Earlier people used to consume ghee in large quantities with heavy, refined and fried food. Besides, physical activity was also less. For this reason, it was believed that ghee increases weight. Actually the problem was not ghee, but excess calories and sedentary lifestyle.
From nutritional point of view, desi ghee is very beneficial. Fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin A, D, E and K are found in it, which are essential for bones, eyes and immunity. Apart from this, it contains short-chain fatty acids like butyrate, which help in improving intestinal health and strengthening gut health. Desi ghee does not contain lactose and casein, so it is more easily digested for many people than butter.
Dietician Amreen Shaikh says that desi ghee also helps in controlling appetite. Eating it gives a feeling of filling the stomach quickly and the satisfaction remains for a long time. This reduces the craving for frequent snacking and eating sweets. Also, a little ghee enhances the taste of food, which makes it easier to follow a healthy diet for a long time.
Although desi ghee is healthy, it contains high amount of saturated fat. Therefore its limited consumption is very important. Generally, one to two teaspoons of desi ghee daily is considered sufficient for healthy adults. This quantity can be taken while cooking or by mixing it directly with food. It is important that ghee is used after measurement and not by guesswork.
People who have high cholesterol or heart problems should consume desi ghee only occasionally and that too with a diet rich in fiber, vegetables and unsaturated fats. Overall, desi ghee is not an enemy, but if taken in the right quantity and at the right time, it can prove to be a strong ally of health.
