AIIMS Doctors Warning for parents of Kids: Doctors of AIIMS New Delhi have saved the life of a 1.25 year old girl from Yamunanagar by performing a very serious and life-saving treatment. A big iron spring was stuck in the food pipe of this 14 month old girl, which was not only very difficult to remove but also risky, but the doctors of AIIMS not only removed this spring but also gave a very important advice to the parents to keep children away from small things in the house because they can understand from this case how dangerous these things can be for them.
Let us tell you that the girl was brought to AIIMS in children’s emergency. He was vomiting repeatedly for about a week and had stopped eating and drinking properly for the last two days. The parents did not know whether the child had swallowed any foreign object or not, because such small children cannot tell what they have swallowed. When the X-ray was done, everyone was surprised. A large metal spring was stuck in the upper part of the child’s food pipe.
Earlier an attempt was made to remove the spring through endoscopy in a private hospital, but it was deeply stuck inside. There was swelling and wounds in the surrounding tube. Removing the spring was considered dangerous because of the risk of the hose bursting. Therefore the girl was immediately sent to AIIMS.
Pediatric gastroenterologists at AIIMS examined, but due to the extent of injury and swelling, they handed over the case to the surgery team and the case was handled by Pediatric Surgery Professor Dr. Vishesh Jain.
Doctor Jain told that this was a very risky case. The size of the spring, its structure, and the length of time it remained trapped could have resulted in rupture of the esophagus and the need for open surgery. All possible risks were explained to the parents and complete preparation was done before the operation. Dr. Parin took over the responsibility of anesthesia.
During the operation, endoscopy revealed that the spring had partially sunk into the wall of the tube and wounds had formed inside. The doctors took out the spring by rotating it slowly, using modern technology, very carefully without causing any new injury. Later, re-examination was done and it was a matter of relief that there was no hole in the food pipe.
After the operation the girl’s condition improved rapidly. The very next day, oral feeding was started and now preparations are on to discharge him in a healthy condition. Doctors said that this success was possible due to the excellent coordination of surgery, gastroenterology, anesthesia, nursing staff and emergency team.
This case is a big warning for parents and caregivers.
Parents of small children should keep these things in mind
Dr. Jain said that things like springs, coins, batteries, small parts of toys should always be kept out of the reach of small children. Many times children are not even aware of swallowing something. If the child vomits without any reason, does not eat food or drools excessively, consult a doctor immediately. What appeared to be normal vomiting for a week was actually a life-threatening threat, which was averted with timely, proper treatment and the teamwork of AIIMS. However, many times the symptoms of children are not caught by the parents and these things can be fatal.
