Junk Food & Physical Inactivity Causing Diabetes In Kids: In recent years, such changes are taking place in the health of children which were previously considered impossible. Due to the lifestyle of today’s children, those diseases which earlier were seen only in adults, are also appearing quickly. The increasing cases of diabetes in children have become a major public health problem, which requires immediate attention. Type 2 diabetes is rapidly occurring in children due to increasing obesity, high sugar intake and less physical activity. There are two types of diabetes in children – Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, usually occurs in young children and is insulin dependent, it is mostly caused by genetics or infection.
Dr. Vrajendu BB, Consultant, Pediatrics, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, explains, “Type 2 diabetes, which was earlier considered a lifestyle disease of adults, has now started appearing in young children as well. In some cases, it is called ‘Modi’, that is, the disease that occurs in adults is now appearing in children too.” Excess body fat, especially around the abdomen, impairs the body’s insulin response, making it difficult to control blood sugar. Due to insulin resistance, the body does not process glucose properly and blood sugar increases. Consuming sugary drinks, refined carbs, deep-fried snacks and packaged foods can lead to sudden increase in blood glucose and weight gain. Dr. Vrajendu BB says, “Physical inactivity further increases this problem.
Nowadays children spend more time on screens for studies and entertainment, due to which they do not get time to play outside and exercise.” The body needs regular movement, due to which the muscles convert glucose into energy and insulin sensitivity increases. If this does not happen then metabolic problems increase quickly. Children who use screens excessively have sleep problems, which leads to hormonal imbalance and loss of appetite control, which increases the risk of diabetes. The early warning signs are very mild and parents often ignore them. “Excessive thirst, frequent urination, strange fatigue, unexplained weight changes, darkening of the skin of the neck or armpits (medically known as acanthosis nigricans) and frequent infections are all signs of high blood sugar,”
Dr. Vrajendu BB tells. If diabetes is not detected and treated on time, it can cause long-term problems in the heart, kidneys, nerves and eyes, which start in adolescence itself. Prevention should start at home and should also be adopted in schools and communities. A balanced diet consisting of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and adequate protein should be taken instead of processed and sugary foods.
At least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, less screen time, regular sleep and periodic health checkups are necessary. Regular checking of height, weight and BMI of children can detect obesity and metabolic risk early. Awareness, early screening in high risk groups and lifestyle changes are necessary to prevent diabetes in children. This disease can be controlled by taking steps at the right time, due to which the health and quality of life of the children will remain good for a long time.
