5 home remedies to get rid of cough
Ginger : Ginger is famous for its medicinal properties. The anti-inflammatory properties present in it reduce swelling of the throat and help in breaking the mucus, which provides instant relief from cough. Drinking ginger tea is the best option. For this, boil fresh ginger pieces in a cup of water for 10-15 minutes and then filter it and drink it. This will soothe cough and also remove dryness of the throat. However, do not consume it in excess, as it may cause stomach irritation.
Gargle with salt water: This is the simplest and oldest remedy, which even doctors often recommend. By gargling with salt mixed with lukewarm water, the mucus accumulated in the throat becomes loose and comes out. It also helps in reducing itching and swelling of the throat. For this, mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of lukewarm water and gargle 2-3 times a day. This method is very effective especially in tonsil and throat infections, but do not try it on small children.
Wonders of mint and steam: Mint leaves contain menthol, which cools the throat and suppresses cough. Apart from drinking mint tea, inhaling its steam helps a lot in opening the blocked pathways of the lungs. Take hot water in a vessel and add a few drops of mint oil or mint leaves in it. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the hot steam deeply. This will open your blocked nose and help in expelling the phlegm accumulated in the chest.
Turmeric and black pepper: Turmeric contains an element called curcumin, which is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. When turmeric is taken with black pepper, the body is able to absorb turmeric better. Prepare golden milk by mixing a pinch of turmeric and a little ground black pepper in lukewarm milk. Honey can also be added to it as per taste. This will reduce night cough and will also strengthen immunity.
