Bangladesh: The decision not to play in the T20 World Cup 2026 was wrong, Bangladesh has accepted so far. BCB is seeking refuge in India.
Calcutta : Bangladesh’s new Minister of State for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque has extended a cordial message to India to resolve ‘diplomatic complications’ during the 2026 T20 World Cup. On Tuesday (February 17), he spoke about rebuilding ties with India soon after being sworn in.
Aminul Haque, former captain and goalkeeper of the Bangladesh national football team, was given the post after the landslide victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the recent elections. His position was completely different from the sports advisor (acting minister) of the recently removed interim government. From Asif Nazrul. Nazrul was part of the administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
“After attending the swearing-in ceremony today, I met the Deputy High Commissioner of India at Parliament House. I discussed this matter (T20 World Cup issue) with him,” Aminul Haque told a Cricbuzz correspondent on Wednesday after his swearing-in ceremony.
“He was very friendly and I also spoke to him in a friendly manner. I told him, we want to resolve this issue quickly through talks, because we want to have friendly relations with all our neighboring countries. From sports to everything, we want to develop a sincere and friendly relationship.” He said.
The Yunus government’s anti-India stance was identified as the main reason for the deterioration of relations between neighboring countries. But it started when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to drop Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the 2026 IPL. This was followed by a kind of pride war, as a result of which Bangladesh announced that they would not be coming to India to play in the T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh officially cited security concerns, which the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected. Scotland were eventually included in the World Cup instead of them.
“You know we could not play in the World Cup due to diplomatic complications. If these issues had been discussed and resolved earlier, our team would have probably participated,” he said.
