Kolkata: England Test captain Ben Stokes suffered a serious facial injury after being hit by a ball during practice. Stokes posted a photo of his injured face on Instagram and wrote: “You should see the condition of the cricket ball.” The picture showed that his right eye was severely swollen. He had bruises on his cheeks and lips, and a bandaged nose. The 34-year-old recently led England in their 4-1 loss to Australia in the Ashes.

Stokes and former England player Moeen Ali are set to join another former cricketer Andrew Flintoff in the England Lions coaching setup for the white-ball series against the Pakistan Shaheens in Abu Dhabi in February-March.

Stokes suffered a groin injury while bowling in the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney earlier this month. According to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) website, Moeen Ali, who retired from English domestic cricket and joined Yorkshire for the T20 Blast, will join the England Lions coaching setup. Stokes and Flintoff are joined by Troy Cooley, Neil McKenzie, Sarah Taylor, Neil Killeen and Amar Rashid, according to the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) website.

Jordan Cox and Dan Mousley will lead England Lions’ T20 and 50-over sides respectively during the white-ball series in the UAE. Notably, this tour will be the first time the England Lions will play a white-ball series abroad since the tour of Sri Lanka in February 2022. The Lions will also host South Africa ‘A’ and Sri Lanka in white-ball cricket this year, with more white-ball tours planned in the future.
