Can heart, kidney and sugar patients fast?

Sugar patient Roza in Ramadan: The holy month of Ramadan has started and most of the people belonging to the Muslim community keep fast. Since during Roza one has to fast for about 11-12 hours without drinking a drop of water and without eating anything, it is important for those who are suffering from any chronic, acute or lifestyle related diseases to know from experts whether they can keep Roza or not? Let us know about this from Dr. Kafeel Khan…

Dr. Kafeel says, ‘People often ask this question if they have diabetes, can they keep fast. Some people ask that if they are heart patients or have kidney problems and have to take medicines, can they fast without food and water for such a long period? I advise them that if you have diabetes but your sugar is under control then you can keep the fast comfortably but if it is not so then some things will have to be respected.

Keep these things in mind

  1. .If you eat sugar tablets, then eat your sugar tablets first in the evening immediately after fasting iftar. If you take insulin, then take long acting insulin immediately after Iftar and then you can eat till Sehri.
  2. . Since you can eat a lot during Roza between Iftar and Sehri, then during this period, take care of drinking more water than eating. Drink as much water as possible during this entire time, because then you have to remain without water for more than 12 hours.
  3. . When you do Roza Sehri in the morning, you have to keep in mind that your diet should contain plenty of protein and complex carbohydrates. Like oats, sprouts, roti, egg, fruits etc. should be there.
  4. . During Roza Iftar, you should avoid sweets, RoohAfza, fried foods and junk food.
  5. . You can eat from Iftar to Sehri, but try to eat it in small portions at several times and not eat too much at one go.
  6. . People whose sugar has gone down significantly in the last 6 months, or who have diabetic ketoacidosis or who have type-1 diabetes, who have chronic kidney disease or heart disease. Those whose sugar remains uncontrolled, i.e. sometimes it becomes very high and sometimes it becomes very low, should not fast. Can I do a blood test?

Dr. Kafeel says, ‘Many people are apprehensive about whether they should check their sugar during fasting or not, so let me tell you that you can test your blood with a glucometer during fasting, it does not break your fast. You check your sugar, if sugar is very low or high then break your fast and have breakfast, because Allah knows everything and cares about you.
