Vitamin D deficiency linked to Thyroid.
In today’s fast-paced life, Vitamin D deficiency is becoming a major health problem. Most people stay inside the house or office all day long, due to which the body does not get enough sunlight. Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced in the body primarily from sunlight. But when its level decreases in the body, it can be associated with many health problems. In recent years, the question has also started to arise whether Vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of serious thyroid related diseases, even thyroid cancer.
Dr. Yash Mathur, senior doctor of HCG Cancer Center, Borivali, says that thyroid is an important gland of the body, which produces hormones and controls metabolism, energy and many important functions of the body. When the thyroid does not function properly, many types of problems can start in the body. Experts say that Vitamin D has a deep connection with the body’s immune system and hormonal balance. This is why its deficiency can be linked to many hormonal problems.
Some research has found that people who have thyroid cancer often have low levels of Vitamin D. Scientists believe that Vitamin D plays a role in the development of body cells and controlling the immune system. When its quantity is low, inflammation and immune imbalance can increase in the body, which can contribute to increased risk of many diseases.
However, experts also clarify that Vitamin D deficiency is not directly considered the cause of thyroid cancer. But it can create certain conditions that increase the risk of thyroid-related problems. Therefore, doctors often recommend getting Vitamin D levels checked in patients suffering from thyroid related problems. There are some common symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency which people often ignore. Such as constant fatigue, pain in bones, feeling of weakness, changes in mood and hair fall. Interestingly, many of these symptoms can also be seen in thyroid related problems. This is why sometimes there is a need to investigate both the situations simultaneously.
According to experts, to maintain the level of Vitamin D, it is important to spend some time in the sun every day. Apart from this, such foods should be included in the diet which contain Vitamin D in good quantity. Like fatty fish, eggs, fortified milk and some dairy products. If the level of Vitamin D in the body is very low then supplements can also be taken on the advice of the doctor.
