Night time is meant to give rest to the body and mind, but for some people this time proves to be the most restless. As soon as they lie down in bed, they start feeling a tingling, slight burning or stretching sensation in their legs. Moving the legs provides relief for some time, but as soon as you stop, the problem returns. Many people ignore it considering it to be normal fatigue, whereas it could be a sign of restless legs syndrome.

According to scientists, restless legs syndrome is related to the brain and nerves. A chemical called dopamine in our brain plays an important role in controlling muscle movements. When the balance of dopamine gets disturbed, body movements are affected and there is a desire to move the legs again and again. Some experts also link it to Parkinson’s disease, because in that condition also dopamine deficiency is found. Although the two diseases are different, chemical imbalances are thought to be important in both.

Dopamine is not the only reason behind this problem, but iron deficiency can also be a major reason. While iron is essential for the formation of blood, it also helps in the proper functioning of the brain. Due to iron deficiency in the body, dopamine levels can be affected. This problem has been seen temporarily in some women during pregnancy.

Symptoms of restless legs syndrome often appear gradually. Initially a slight tingling or discomfort is felt, which may increase with time. This problem arises more in a state of rest. Symptoms become apparent as soon as the person lies down or sits for a long time. Walking or moving the legs provides some relief, but this problem increases at night and sleep is interrupted again and again. Due to incomplete sleep, one may feel tired, irritable and lack of concentration throughout the day.

Doctors usually assess this condition on the basis of symptoms. Iron level is seen through blood test. Treatment includes lifestyle improvements, regular exercise, setting a fixed sleeping schedule and taking medicines if needed. Reducing caffeine intake and doing light stretching before sleeping can also prove beneficial.
