Doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) saved the life of a 14-month-old girl by performing an operation on Thursday. The girl had accidentally swallowed a 2-inch long metal spring.

Children often put things in their mouth while playing. In such a situation, there is a danger of small items getting stuck in the throat, which can also be fatal. If the child is very young, it takes a lot of time to identify the problem and emergency situations arise. One such case recently reached All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). After which on Thursday the doctor operated the 14 year old girl and saved her life.
AIIMS said in an official statement that a metal spring was stuck in the food pipe and was successfully removed through endoscopic surgery. The girl is a resident of Yamunanagar. He was brought to the hospital due to continuous vomiting and being unable to eat or drink for two days. During the examination, it was seen in the X-ray that a large metal spring was stuck in the upper food pipe of the child. Ulcerations were also seen on the mucosa. Speaking to IANS, Dr Vishal Jain, Professor, Department of Pediatric Surgery, said, “The spring was stuck in the upper part of the food pipe. Its thickness was much more than the spring of a normal pen. It was about half an inch wide and 1.5 to 2 inches long.

AIIMS shifted from private hospital
He told that earlier an attempt was made to remove it endoscopically in a private hospital in Dehradun, but it was risky due to swelling and wound in the food pipe, so the girl was immediately sent to AIIMS.
Dr. Jain and his team used advanced endoscopic techniques in the operating room. The spring was removed by rotating it carefully so that there was no hole in the tube. AIIMS said, “After the surgery, the child’s condition improved quickly and she was started eating normally the next day.”
doctor’s advice
Dr. Jain advised parents to keep things like springs, batteries, coins and small toy parts out of the reach of children, as swallowing them can be fatal. He said that if the child swallows something, take him to the doctor immediately so that the doctor can see the size of the object and provide appropriate treatment.
