New Delhi. Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has praised the historic decision of the US Supreme Court, in which most of the major tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump were abolished. Jairam Ramesh posted on the social media platform He further said that this decision given on Friday is being considered a big blow to Trump’s economic agenda.
Meanwhile, while reacting to the court’s decision on Trump’s tariffs, Congress leader Pawan Kheda wrote on the social media platform ‘X’ that haste is the work of the devil. The Supreme Court of America has canceled the so-called global tariff of Donald Trump. If India had waited just 18 more days, perhaps we would not have got stuck in a one-sided anti-India trade deal. He further wrote that why did PM Modi make that call to Washington late at night on 2 February? Why did India abandon the initial strategy of waiting till the US Supreme Court’s decision?
In fact, the conservative-led court took a rare step and limited the use of the President’s executive powers. The court declared that it did not have the authority to impose blanket import duties on America’s trading partners, including India, under the Emergency Act of 1977. Politico called the 6-3 decision a major rejection of a key part of Trump’s economic program.
Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized the constitutional limits of the president’s powers. He said, “The President claims extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited quantity, duration, and scope. Given the breadth, history, and constitutional context of this purported power, he must show clear parliamentary approval to exercise it.” He further said that the 1977 law that Trump relied upon fell ‘short’ of the required Congressional approval.
According to American media, the judges ruled that the President did not have the authority to impose such large tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The Hill noted that the court “on Friday struck down most of President Trump’s sweeping tariffs and struck down a key pillar of his economic strategy, ruling that his use of emergency legislation to restructure global trade was illegal.”
