Dr. Sonia Rawat, Director of Preventive Health and Wellness Department, Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi told News18. Junk food is high in calories and low in fiber, which does not fill the stomach quickly and makes one feel hungry again and again. Due to this, weight increases rapidly and fat starts accumulating on the stomach, waist and thighs. The trans fat and excess salt present in it increases bad cholesterol in the body and reduces good cholesterol. This increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart blockage and heart attack. People who eat junk food for a long time are more likely to develop heart disease at an early age. The effect of junk food on the digestive system is also very dangerous. Due to lack of fiber and fried food, problems like gas, acidity, constipation, stomach ache and irritable bowel syndrome arise.
According to experts, continuously consuming junk food also increases the risk of fatty liver disease, which can later lead to serious conditions like liver failure. Mental health also does not remain untouched by junk food. Highly processed and sugary foods can increase depression, anxiety and mood swings. Junk food disrupts the balance of feel-good hormones like serotonin in the brain, causing irritability, fatigue and lack of focus. Its effect is clearly visible on studies and behavior of children.
