Greenland, which used to look peaceful covered with ice on the world map, now seems to be becoming the new center of the world war. US President Donald Trump has once again made his intentions clear. Trump said that he can go to any extent to make Greenland a part of America. When he was asked whether he would use military force for this, Trump did not deny. His very statement of ‘no comment’ has become an alarm bell for the countries of Europe. This stance of Trump shows that no matter how much French President Emmanuel Macron and British PM Keir Starmer protest, the White House is not going to step back. Trump has declared it essential for America’s national security.
Trump’s direct warning to Europe
Donald Trump has bluntly advised the countries of Europe to stay within their limits. He said in an interview with NBC News that Europe should pay attention to the Russia-Ukraine war. According to Trump, interfering in Greenland’s affairs could prove costly for Europe. He clearly warned that if America does not get Greenland then it will impose more tariffs on European countries. This is a kind of economic siege due to which the economies of countries like Germany, France and Britain can collapse.
Tariff plan may come into effect from February 1
Expressing his intentions, Trump has also set a deadline for the tariff. According to his plan:
10% import duty will be imposed on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France and Germany.1
· Britain, Netherlands and Finland will also come under this economic penalty.
· This tariff has been threatened to be implemented from 1 February 2026.
· This restriction will continue until America is allowed to buy Greenland.
Trump angry over Nobel Peace Prize and Norway
Trump’s displeasure is not limited to land alone. Targeting Norway, he said that Norway has complete control over the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump clearly said in a letter to the Prime Minister of Norway that he no longer thinks about peace. In fact, after being ignored for the Nobel Prize, Trump’s attitude has become even more aggressive. He has vowed to acquire Greenland one way or another.
Clouds of crisis over NATO and global trade
The NATO alliance is on the verge of breaking due to this ‘blackmail’ attitude of Trump. Germany and France have termed it hooliganism in international politics. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nilsen has also made it clear that he will not come under any external pressure. Greenland is a democratic society and will take its own decisions. However, Trump believes that it is necessary to get Greenland to strengthen America’s hold in the Arctic region. Now it remains to be seen whether Trump will actually use force or is it just part of a bigger deal.
