According to doctors, genetic factor is seen to be quite important in myopia. However, lifestyle, screen time and outdoor activities also play a big role in this. It is very important to protect small children from screens.
If the parents’ eyesight is weak, the child’s eyesight can be affected.Facts About Child’s Eye Health: Nowadays even small children have started wearing glasses. In most of the cases, children wear glasses due to myopia i.e. inability to see distant objects. The problem of myopia is increasing very rapidly in children and screen time is considered to be the biggest reason for it. However, according to doctors, genetic factors also play an important role in myopia. Parents often have a question in their mind that if their eyesight is weak, does it affect their children also? Let us understand this from the doctor.
Dr. Tushar Grover, medical director and ophthalmologist at Vision Eye Center, New Delhi, told News18. That if parents have worn glasses at a young age due to myopia, it can affect the child’s eyes as well. At an early age, the child may suffer from myopia and may have to resort to glasses to see distant things. Myopia is genetic in many cases and this cannot be ignored. However, nowadays screen time and outdoor activities have also reduced, due to which children are wearing glasses.
Doctor Grover told that in most of the cases myopia is the reason behind wearing spectacles on the eyes of children. In myopia, the child sees nearby objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurred. In such conditions, it is advisable to wear spectacles according to the power of the child. The problem of getting plus power is also seen in many children. The reason for this is small size of the eye or some kind of problem in the cornea. In such a condition, the child’s eyes develop plus power. For this also it is advisable to wear glasses. All parents should get their children’s eyes checked from time to time.
Now the question is how can children be protected from glasses? On this, Doctor Tushar says that children’s eyes cannot be protected from genetic factors, but screen use can be reduced and outdoor activities can be increased. Watching mobile, tablet or TV for a long time, reading a book too close and studying in low light puts pressure on the eye muscles. In such a situation, children who already have genetic risk can get glasses sooner. Children who play in open sunlight daily, their eyes develop better. Natural light is beneficial for the eyes and can reduce the risk of myopia.
