Dr. Saroj says that there is no medicine for Alzheimer’s disease in the world yet. Whatever medicines are available in the market, they are only for symptomatic relief, that is, they treat the symptoms seen in the patient. This will be the first medicine that will work on curing Alzheimer’s.

This is a chronic disease which takes a very long time to develop. This means that from the time this disease enters you, it takes 15-20 years for its symptoms to appear and once it happens, it is difficult to reverse it.

‘The molecule or drug we have prepared will do two big things. The first is that through this we can find out much earlier whether someone is having Alzheimer’s or not. Its second specialty is that it is also a therapy for Alzheimer’s, which means it can also cure the disease. Right now it is a molecule but when its clinical trials are done and successful, it will be called a drug.

Why does Alzheimer’s occur?
There are two main reasons for Alzheimer’s disease, the first is activation of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase and the second is the accumulation of amyloid beta in our brain in aggregates. Both these processes happen slowly, which is why Alzheimer’s can be identified after a long time.

How does it work?
The molecule that has been created can not only block the enzyme acetylcholinesterase that causes Alzheimer’s but also prevents the formation of amyloid beta. It is also an antioxidant. In this case, it is a multipurpose molecule which both diagnoses and treats the disease. It is the first molecule in the world to do so.

The most special thing about this molecule is that it will be the world’s first medicine which also works on amyloid beta, whereas till now the medicines available in the market work only on acetylcholinesterase. With this, the disease can be prevented in advance after early diagnosis.

Who created this molecule?

Dr. Saroj says that this molecule has been prepared in IIT-BHU. It has been created by Assistant Professor Dr. Gyan Prakash Modi there, while its characterization and validation is being done. Delhi Has been done in AIIMS. Whereas in NII, under the supervision of Dr. Sarika Gupta, the dosage of the drug, its effectiveness and its testing on Alzheimer’s mites have been done on animal models.

Which stage is it in now?
Now its patent has also been done through ICMR and now clinical trials of this molecule are being done. Its pre-clinical trial has been completed. It took 3 years to make it. Now after the success of the clinical trials, it will be recorded as a huge achievement in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
