Ahead of the India-Pakistan match, a new controversy has arisen around Pakistan’s spinner Usman Tariq. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has requested the International Cricket Council or ICC that Tariq should not bowl in full-sleeved shirts while bowling in matches. According to Pathan, it does not show the bowler’s hand movement properly and can create doubt.
There are mainly two questions raised about Tariq’s bowling action. Firstly, some believe he over-bends the ball, which is called ‘chukking’ in cricket and is against the rules. However, the ICC has already cleared him of this charge twice. The second question is about stopping in the middle of his run-up, but that would be legal under the rules if that was his normal delivery method.
Pathan said on his YouTube channel, “Many of the bowlers who had problems with the action in the past used to bowl with full sleeves so that the arm swing was not understood.” So if in doubt, bowlers should be asked to bowl with half sleeves, he said. In this, the umpire and match officials can easily observe the action.
He also said that Tariq’s hand does not bend much during normal bowling. But when he suddenly stops and bowls fast, it needs to be watched. Because the speed of the ball increases, the position of the hand can also change, which can be difficult to detect with the naked eye. That is why half sleeve shirts should be worn to the ball.
In this context, Pathan also highlighted the comments of Legends League umpire Ajay Verma. According to Verma, such an action can confuse the batsmen, as the ball is bowled very close to the umpire. So he suggested that the umpire should lean slightly and wear a dark colored cap so that the bowler’s hands are clearly visible.
