He was thought to be in the squad till the announcement of the team. But in the end it didn’t happen. India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Jitesh Sharma suffered a major shock just before the T20 World Cup 2026. At the last minute he was left out of the team and the selectors gave a chance to Ishan Kishan. As a result, Jitesh missed the opportunity to play in this important competition held on the soil of the country.

After winning the World Cup in the Caribbean in 2024, Jitesh was a regular in India’s T20 squad. However, despite getting limited opportunities, he could not prove himself in that way. On the other hand, after being out of the national team for a long time, Ishan Kishan got a place in the team after performing brilliantly in domestic cricket.

Jitesh was initially disappointed to hear the news of not getting a place in the World Cup team. He said, losing the opportunity to play for the country in such a big competition is difficult for any cricketer. Yet he gradually overcame that disappointment. Jitesh said, “After receiving the news, I was a bit devastated. I am human, so naturally I was upset. But over time I got over it with the support of family and friends.”

It was at this time that more sad news came in his life. Jitesh’s father fell ill and died on 1 February. Jitesh stayed by his father’s side during his illness and took care of him for seven consecutive days. Said, “My father fell ill and died on February 1. I stayed with him for seven days. Later, I realized that my father needed me more than the World Cup. So I have no regrets. I am grateful to God for being by my father’s last hour.”

He feels lucky to have been by his father’s side during his last days. Jitesh also said that watching the World Cup at home was a completely different experience for him. It felt much more stressful than playing on the field. Still, he is very happy with the team’s success and feels that the Indian cricketers have worked hard to achieve the goals set by the coach, captain and the team.
