Calcutta : The FIFA World Cup is going to be held in USA, Canada and Mexico in a few months. The Middle East team Iran has made it to this year’s World Cup. However, after the joint attack of America and Israel on Iran, the president of the country’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, indicated that he would not go to the United States to play the World Cup.
Last December he received the ‘FIFA Peace Prize’ from FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He is the one who called this campaign against Iran as a ‘war campaign’.
Note that Iran has qualified to play in the main stage of the World Cup through the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). They will play against Belgium, New Zealand and Egypt in Group ‘G’. But with the US launching missile strikes, FIFA Secretary General Matthias Grafstrom said the situation would be monitored.
“I read the news about Iran this morning as you did,” Grafstrom told the International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday. Everything must be seen and understood first.’
He also said, ‘Today we had a meeting and it would not be right to comment in detail now, but we will keep an eye on all the issues around the world. We have drawn the final in Washington, where all teams participated and our aim is to ensure a safe World Cup with all teams participating.’
Meanwhile, Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj has expressed serious doubts about Iran’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in June. Taj said on Tehran television: “It’s difficult for us to set goals for the World Cup with what has happened. It’s difficult to make a final decision right now.” He also said that the National League has been suspended indefinitely.
Iran’s matches in Group G are against New Zealand on June 15, Belgium (in Los Angeles) on June 21 and Egypt on June 26. Iran had planned to stay at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona. If all goes well, Iran could face the US directly in Dallas on July 3 in the knockout round. If Iran is forced to withdraw from the 2026 World Cup, Iraq could advance directly to the group stage.
