Kaunch plant is also found among the valuable medicinal trees and plants in the forests of Vindhya region of Madhya Pradesh. In the local rural language it is called Kevanch. Kaunch plant is not only very important from Ayurvedic point of view, but is also a means of livelihood for the people living in the forests. The fruits and other parts of Kaunch growing spontaneously in rural forests are used in daily life according to their nature. However, the special type of hairs present on its fruits cause unbearable itching, due to which the villagers are afraid to even go near it.

While giving information to Local 18, Ayurveda Medical Officer Dr. Vipin Singh said that Kaunch is called Kewach in Bagheli dialect. This plant grows in forests and gardens during monsoon. The fine hairs present on its pod cause intense itching as soon as they come in contact with the body. These hairs can stick to the body through the air, due to this fear people do not even go near it.

Dr. Vipin Singh told that in common parlance it is called Kaunch (Kevach), whereas its scientific name is Mucuna Pririyansh. The seeds, leaves and roots of this plant are full of medicinal properties. It has anti-tremor properties, which are helpful in removing body tremors, inability to walk and weakness of the nervous system. Kaunch Beej is used in Ayurveda to correct physical, mental and hormonal imbalances. Being a Vajikarana chemical, its seed powder is considered useful in problems like hormonal imbalance, weakness and impotence. However, excessive consumption may cause diarrhea. Pregnant women, lactating mothers and children should not consume it.

According to Dr. Singh, Kaunch plant is completely medicinal. Consuming the powder of its seeds mixed in kheer provides relief in diseases like paralysis, while the decoction of its roots is useful in stomach related diseases, diarrhea and dysentery. Due to these miraculous properties, Kaunch is also called magic bean.
