Sunrisers: This decision has gained more importance as it was reported recently that some of the Indian Premier League backed franchises may skip Pakistani players in the auction.
Sunrisers Leeds have signed Pakistani leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed in The Hundred League auction. The franchise signed him at a cost of 1 lakh 90 thousand pounds (about Rs. 2.34 crores). There was a long tug-of-war with the Trent Rockets over him at the auction. In the end, Sunrisers Leeds managed to sign this Pakistani spinner with the highest bid.
This signing has gained special importance in cricket circles. Because recently there was a perception that Indian-owned franchises were reluctant to field Pakistani players in major T20 leagues. However, Sunrisers Leeds have challenged that notion by signing Abrar Ahmed.
This decision has gained more importance as it was recently reported that some franchises backed by the Indian Premier League may skip Pakistani players in the auction. Because Pakistani cricketers are banned from playing in IPL. However, The Hundred does not have that restriction. In that context, this signing of Abrar Ahmed is seen as a new message to many.
27-year-old Abrar Ahmed is already a well-known name in international cricket for Pakistan. He has played 46 Tests, 28 ODIs and 52 T20 Internationals for Pakistan. He was also a member of the Pakistan team in the recently held 2026 T20 World Cup and grabbed attention with 23 runs and 3 wickets against Sri Lanka in the Super Eight round.
This will be Abrar’s first appearance in a T20 league in Europe. Earlier he played in Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League and Major League Cricket. However, his playing in The Hundred will depend on the permission of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Note that the Sunrisers Leeds franchise is fully owned by the Indian conglomerate Sun Group, headed by Kalanidhi Maran and Kavya Maran. Earlier the name of this team was Northern Super Changers. The team was renamed after the new ownership and Abrar Ahmed was brought into the team in this auction.
