Parvo virus infection is spreading rapidly in pet dogs and local puppies in Satna. According to veterinarians, the number of cases in OPD has been continuously increasing since the last week of February. Misunderstanding and incomplete vaccination is making the situation more serious, whereas this deadly disease can be prevented with timely vaccination.

Talking to Local 18, Dr. Brihaspati Bharti, in-charge of District Veterinary Hospital, Satna, said that in this season there are continuous fluctuations in temperature due to which the immunity of puppies becomes weak. After breeding, when the female bitch gives birth to babies, there is a danger of this infection spreading rapidly.

Apart from parvo, diseases like canal cough and distemper are also seen more in this season. In many cases, after one puppy gets infected, it spreads rapidly to the remaining 6-7 children and the death rate is also very high.

Parvo is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects puppies aged 6 weeks to 6 months. The virus attacks the intestines and bone marrow, causing high fever, foamy vomiting, thin or bloody stools, lethargy and severe dehydration.

The infection spreads through contact with infected stool, vomit, contaminated utensils, bedding or ground. The special thing is that this virus can survive in the environment for months. Sometimes even older dogs up to three years of age fall prey to it. Treatment is possible but it may prove lengthy and expensive.

Dr. Bharti said that many people have this misconception that just vaccinating the dog for rabies is enough, whereas to protect against parvo, the first vaccination at the age of 30 days and a booster dose after four weeks is mandatory. This disease can be completely prevented by vaccination at regular intervals between 6 to 16 weeks of age. If vaccination is done on time, the possibility of getting parvo is almost eliminated.

Experts recommend keeping puppies away from crowded or infected places. Clean their living space, utensils and toys regularly with bleach solution. Clean the paws after coming from outside and immediately isolate sick dogs. Light and nutritious food like porridge, boiled potatoes, cheese or mother’s milk helps in increasing their immunity. If symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy are seen, contact a veterinarian immediately as delay can prove fatal.
