ICC T20 World Cup 2026: After Bangladesh pulled out of the tournament over security issues for the tour of India, there were rumors that Pakistan might follow suit.
Pakistan men’s cricket team led by Salman Ali Agha will leave for Colombo, Sri Lanka on February 2 to participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup. For the past one week, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had many dramatic discussions, but in the end, the decision to play in the World Cup was upheld. After the Bangladesh team pulled out of the tournament over security issues for the tour of India, there were rumors that Pakistan might follow suit.
Even after announcing the World Cup squad, the PCB has not made it clear whether they will participate in the tournament at all. There are various speculations in the media about the possibility of boycotting the India-Pakistan match or withdrawing from the entire World Cup. However, according to a PTI report, the PCB has already finalized the team’s itinerary and the team will leave for Colombo in the early hours of February 2.
While the Pakistan Cricket Board has supported Bangladesh’s security concerns, it has not taken any tough decisions, fearing a strain on relations with the International Cricket Council. ICC rules and maintaining international diplomatic balance also became important issues for the PCB. As a result, although support was given to Bangladesh, Pakistan did not go the way of withdrawing from the World Cup.
Meanwhile, as per a tripartite agreement between BCCI, PCB and ICC, India-Pakistan matches in ICC events till 2027 will be played at neutral venues. That is why Pakistan’s entire World Cup schedule will be held in Sri Lanka. Even if the team reaches the final, that match will be in Sri Lanka. There is no big question about security.
According to an inside source of PCB, board chairman Mohsin Naqvi clarified in the discussion with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif that any decision should be taken keeping in mind the future of Pakistan cricket and international relations. All things considered, the Pakistan team has decided to participate in the World Cup and the official announcement will be made by the board soon.
