Ireland captain and veteran all-rounder Paul Stirling created a new history in international T20 cricket. He completed his 160th T20 international match against UAE in Dubai. With this, he overtook former India captain Rohit Sharma to become the record player for most T20 matches played in men’s cricket. This achievement is a proud moment for Ireland cricket.

Ever since his T20 debut against Pakistan in 2009, Paul Stirling has been a reliable top-order batsman for Ireland. Aggressive batting in powerplay overs is his big identity. Due to his strong physique and confident mentality, he can hit big shots with little effort. Straight drives and pull shots over midwicket are the highlights of his batting.

The 35-year-old Sterling is fourth in the list of highest run-scorers in T20 International cricket. His total runs are 3,874. This includes one hundred and 24 fifties. Babar Azam, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are above him in this list. Another Ireland player, George Dockrell, is third with 153 matches.

Sterling has also proven himself as a big-match player. His storming innings against Afghanistan in the finals of World Twenty20 qualifiers in 2012 and 2013 impressed everyone. Although his bowling is currently somewhat limited due to a back injury, he has bowled full overs in the past, including Ireland’s historic win over England in the 2011 World Cup.

Batting first in the match against UAE, Ireland scored 178 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs. In the middle overs, the pair of Lorcan Tucker and Curtis Campher put the team ahead. In the end, the important partnership of Benjamin Kalitz and George Dockrell put up a respectable score for the team. This match will be particularly memorable for Paul Sterling’s record.
