On this subject, we talked to Dr. Amit Miglani, Director of the Department of Gastroenterology at the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, Faridabad.
Prathamesh Kadam often used to make reels with his mother. Prathamesh Kadam Death: If there is stomach ache, vomiting, nausea, cramps, gas, then usually people buy medicines from the chemist’s shop and get cured. Even if food poisoning occurs due to stomach infection, it can be cured by taking medicine on its own. But have you ever heard of cases of death due to stomach infection? Actually, this question has been raised after the death of famous Marathi social media influencer Prathamesh Kadam. His friend told that Prathamesh was hospitalized for a month due to stomach infection. He died due to this infection. Is it possible. We asked this question to gastroenterologists. Dr. Amit Miglani Wanted to know from.
Is it possible
Dr. Amit Miglani told that yes, this can definitely happen. Death can also occur due to stomach infection. But we need to know what kind of stomach infection occurred and what happens after that. Generally, stomach infection does not cause death but it can happen in serious circumstances. There is a high possibility of this happening in two-three cases. He said that if the patient develops pancreatitis or ulcer, then in this situation it can burst and then it can produce poison which can spread throughout the body and the patient can die. Dr. Miglani said that his doctors would know the condition of Prathamesh, but there are many conditions of stomach infection, some of which can even be fatal.
What happens in pancreatitis?
First understand what pancreas is. Pancreas is an organ present in your stomach. It is located between the stomach and the spinal cord. Pancreas is very important for digestion and controlling sugar because it is from here that digestive enzymes and hormones produce insulin hormone to absorb sugar. The pancreas delivers its digestive enzymes to the small intestine through the pancreatic duct. When this pancreas becomes inflamed due to various reasons, it is called pancreatitis. It causes a lot of pain which can extend to back pain. Generally it is not fatal but in serious situations it can be fatal. In some people, when severe type of pancreatitis occurs, it starts affecting the entire body. This can lead to shock and failure of multiple organs, which can prove fatal if timely treatment is not received. In some cases, due to pancreatitis, it bursts and the poison spreads throughout the body. This can also result in death.
Can ulcers also cause death?
When excess acid starts forming in the stomach, it creates wounds in the intestinal wall and gradually a hole starts forming in it. Usually it is treated but if there is delay in treatment it can become serious. In some ulcers, bleeding continues. This can lead to blood deficiency in the body over time. Bleeding from stomach ulcers can be light or heavy. Moderate blood loss can cause anemia, while excessive blood loss can lead to shock. This can be fatal.
Under what circumstances can stomach infection become fatal?
- Sepsis: When stomach infection spreads into the blood, the body’s immune system starts attacking its own organs. This is called sepsis, due to which blood pressure falls and vital organs like kidney and liver stop functioning, which can lead to death.
- Severe pancreatitis: If the inflammation in the pancreas becomes severe, this organ begins to rot. In this condition, the pancreas may burst and toxic enzymes may spread within the body, causing the patient to go into shock.
- Intestinal perforation and internal bleeding: If a stomach ulcer or severe infection penetrates the intestinal wall, the waste from the stomach spreads throughout the body. This can cause sudden severe blood loss and peritonitis (spread of poison in the abdominal lining), which causes immediate death.
- Severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance: Due to continuous vomiting and diarrhea, water and essential minerals (potassium, sodium) are completely lost from the body. Due to this, the heartbeat may stop or the patient may go into coma.
- Delay in treatment and self-medication: In case of stomach ache, taking medicine from the chemist yourself is most dangerous. These medicines suppress the symptoms of the real problem (such as a burst appendix or ulcer) and by the time the patient reaches the hospital, the poison has spread throughout the body.

serious sepsis
Dr. Amit Miglani explains that stomach infection is a common disease in which most of the cases are treated. In some rare cases it reaches a serious condition. If the situation becomes serious and sepsis occurs then it is a dangerous situation. In sepsis, the body’s immune system starts failing and it becomes helpless in fighting external enemies. Due to this, tissue damage starts happening and gradually the life giving organs of the body start failing. Death can also occur in this situation.
when to be alert
Dr. Amit Miglani says that usually only normal symptoms are seen but when you have frequent stomach pain. After recovery for a few days, if the pain increases again, there is blood in the stool, vomiting of blood occurs, then in such cases you should definitely consult a doctor. Otherwise these symptoms can become dangerous.
