Kolkata: India’s 76-run loss against South Africa in the first Super-8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026 exposed the weakness of the team’s batting line-up. India completely failed to bat and were bowled out for just 111 runs chasing a target of 188 runs.

India’s 17-match winning streak in ICC events was broken. India won the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy last year, without losing a match. Before Sunday’s loss against South Africa, India were unbeaten in their four matches in the T20 World Cup 2026 group stage.

Former Indian star Sanjay Manjrekar Suggested that some major changes are needed to bring India back into the tournament and keep their semi-final hopes alive. Abhishek’s poor form and Tilak Varma’s consistent flops at No.3 compounded the problem.

Right now Sanju Samson Can come forward as a good alternative. The right-handed batsman was kept out due to poor form. But he can handle spin bowling well and is capable of solving India’s problems in the opening or top-order.

It now remains to be seen how India resolve their top-order woes in the rest of their Super-8 series. India may return Kuldeep Yadav to the starting XI instead of an additional batsman like Rinku Singh. This will increase the chances of picking up wickets. Akshar Patel can also be seen instead of Washington Sundar this time.
