AI Smart Glasses: The power of vision of people who have lost their eyesight forever may not return but their hope of living their lives has returned. With the help of Artificial Intelligence, such glasses have now been prepared which may not be able to show these people the things happening in front of them but can tell them everything they need by speaking. RP Center for Ophthalmic Sciences of AIIMS New Delhi, in collaboration with Rotary Club, has distributed such talking glasses to 53 patients who have lost up to 90 percent of their eyesight. Told that about 1 crore people in India are suffering from the problem of blindness or weak vision. Many causes of vision loss, such as cataracts or the need for glasses, can be cured if properly treated on time, but about 7 percent of people become blind due to causes that cannot be cured, such as advanced glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, congenital retinal diseases, optic atrophy, etc. Such people need proper counselling, low vision support, helping techniques and rehabilitation services, so that they can become self-reliant and remain mentally strong.
Currently, 450 AI enabled vision smart glasses will be given to more patients at AIIMS RP Centre.
How are talking glasses?
Dr. Vashishtha says that these are AI enabled smart vision glasses. Which have many facilities. These are also charged. These glasses do things like identifying objects, reading written words out loud, recognizing faces, explaining the surrounding scene and showing the way. With this, blind and low vision people are able to understand their surrounding environment better and live life with more confidence.
Can small children also wear these?
These smart vision glasses are connected to technology and children above 10 years of age who can operate smartphones can wear them. Along with providing spectacles, patients at AIIMS are also given training, guidance sessions and continuous technical support on how to use them properly, so that they can take full advantage of them.
How much do these glasses cost?
These are AI enabled special glasses which are quite expensive in the market. The price of one such spectacle in the market is Rs 35000, but Rotary Club in collaboration with AIIMS Delhi has distributed these spectacles free of cost to the patients. These AI enabled glasses have the facility of navigation, music, currency identification. It can read by giving photo in mobile.

AIIMS has so far distributed spectacles to 53 patients. Currently, 450 more such spectacles will be given by Rotary Club, for this AIIMS RP Center is identifying the patients.
Elderly and backward classes face special problems
Dr. Vashishtha says that blindness and serious vision problems are still a major health challenge in India. About 1 crore people in the country are affected by blindness or severe visual impairment. Its impact is especially greater on the elderly and backward classes. Surveys show that many people aged 50 years and above have severe vision problems, which affects their daily work, self-reliance and earnings.
This initiative is not limited to eye treatment only, but it is an important step towards providing a life of dignity, self-reliance and equality in the society. Through new technology, institutional collaboration and sensitive care, the program strives to improve the quality of life of visually impaired people and make them more independent.
