Caring for grandchildren is often thought to be a result of familial responsibility or emotional attachment, but now science has drawn attention to another important aspect of it. According to a recently published research report, the mental abilities related to memory and language of elders who take care of grandchildren are better than those who are not involved in this role.

This study indicates that active participation in family life can also be beneficial for the brain of the elderly. This research has been published in the journal Psychology and Aging, and its lead author is Flavia Cherches.

Two thousand elderly people included in the study
A total of 2,887 grandparents were included in the study, whose age was more than 50 years and the average age was about 67 years. The data of these participants was analyzed between 2016 and 2022. In these tests, abilities like memory, use of words and language skills were specifically tested.

These results emerged in the study
The results of the research showed that the elderly who were taking care of their grandchildren performed better in tests related to memory and verbal skills. Interestingly, this positive effect did not depend on how often grandparents looked after the children or what kind of care they provided. Whether the care was regular or occasional, and whether it was limited to teaching, playing or daily supervision, the mental benefits were found to be almost the same. This led to the conclusion that the most important element is to be actively involved in the caring role.
