Tesla is offering passengers in Austin a robotaxi ride without a human safety driver in the front seat.

CEO Elon Musk Posted on his social media platform X on Thursday: “Tesla Robotaxi Drive Starts in Austin With No Safety Monitors in the Car. Congrats to the Tesla AI team!”

He then made a hiring pitch for engineers interested in “real-world AI solutions,” which he says will “potentially lead AGI” to join the Tesla AI team.

The automaker has launched its Robotaxis Texas City last June In limited deployments with a safety operator in the front passenger seat. Tesla first offered those first rides to influential and hand-picked customers. in December, Tesla has started its robotoxi test in Austin Without a safety driver in the front seat – a warning if a man is needed to take the car.

Not all of Tesla’s fleet in Austin will be fully driverless. Per Tesla’s AI lead Ashok Illuswamy: “Starting with some unsupervised vehicles mixed with a larger robotaxi fleet with safety monitors, and the proportion will increase over time.”

It’s not clear if the rides are free or if Tesla is renting Some of Tesla’s rivals, such as Zoox and Waymo, did not immediately charge for driverless rides after initial deployment.
