Calcutta : Tilak Verma makes a successful return to competitive cricket after surgery. Relief returned to the Indian team before the World Cup.
A star-studded IPL India ‘A’ team defeated USA by 38 runs in the ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup 2026 warm-up match at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Monday. Batting first, the India ‘A’ team followed the attacking style of the senior team. Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman Narayan Jagadishan played a brilliant innings of 104 runs off 55 balls, hitting 11 fours and 5 sixes.
In reply, the USA put up a respectable performance on a flat wicket and eventually scored 200 runs. The highlight of their innings was Sanjay Krishnamurthy’s 18-ball 41-run innings. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, who is being considered as a possible replacement if Washington Sundar is ruled out with injury, staked his claim for a place in the team with three wickets.
The main objective for the national selection committee, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav was to check Tilak Verma’s match fitness after completing a three-week ‘return to play’ protocol at the Center of Excellence in Bangalore. Hyderabad’s stylish left-handed batsman Tilak scored 38 runs off 24 balls. He hit two brilliant sixes against left-arm spinners Harmeet Singh and Nostush Kenzig. Targeting Harmeet in particular, he hit three boundaries.
Tilak showed no signs of uneasiness during the 24-ball innings. Fielding as well, he ran backwards and took an excellent catch, dismissing Saiteja Mukkamalla.
Tilak also bowled, taking one wicket and another catch. With Tilak passing the fitness test and his chances of regaining the number three batting position looking strong, Sanju Samson’s chances may end here after failing in five consecutive matches. Chances of Ishan Kisan getting a chance to replace him are increasing.
