The eyes of the entire world are currently focused on President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policy and tariff war, but meanwhile, the latest report of the US Labor Department has surprised everyone from Washington to New York. According to data released on Wednesday, American companies have hired 1,30,000 new people in the last month. This is much more than expected. Where economists were estimating only 75,000 jobs, this tremendous figure has made the Trump administration happy. But behind this ‘good news’ there is a bitter truth hidden which has worried American experts and the general public.

Even though last month’s figures may look strong, the amendments made by the government in the figures for the last two years (2024-2025) in the same report are scary. According to government data, out of the number of jobs that were claimed to be created last year i.e. in 2025, lakhs of jobs have now disappeared from ‘papers’. In the year 2025, the total number of jobs has come down to only 1,81,000. This is the worst performance after the pandemic period of 2020. Earlier the report had claimed that 5,84,000 jobs were created, which means more than half of the jobs were cut in the amendment.

Impact of Trump’s policy?

The surprising thing is that while the pace of new recruitments is slow, the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.3%. Economists are considering Trump’s strict immigration policy as a major reason behind this. Due to decrease in the number of people coming from abroad, competition for jobs has reduced. According to the Dallas Federal Reserve, now only 20,000 to 30,000 new jobs are needed a month to keep the unemployment rate stable, whereas in 2023 this figure was 2.5 lakh.
