Washington: In India, if anyone wants reliable support of cheap medicines, then he remembers Janaushadhi Kendras. Now a similar model has emerged in America also. US President Donald Trump has announced the launch of a new federal website, Trump Rx, whose purpose is to provide relief to ordinary Americans from expensive medicines. Trump claims that this initiative will prove to be the biggest reduction in drug prices in American history. Speaking at the White House, he called it a ‘very big deal’ and said that with this people will not only save money but will also be able to get treatment on time.
What is Trump Rx?
Trump Rx is actually an online platform, where you will get huge discounts on dozens of commonly used prescription medicines. Consumers will be able to download coupons from this website, which can be used in pharmacies across the country. This will especially benefit those people who do not have insurance or who postpone treatment due to high prices of medicines. Trump has a big logic behind this initiative. He says that medicines made in America are available cheap to other rich countries, while Americans themselves have to buy the same medicines at many times more expensive prices. According to Trump, American citizens were subsidizing the prices of medicines all over the world for a long time, which will now be abolished.
Under this scheme, ‘Most Favored Nation’ pricing model has been implemented. This means that America will now pay the same price for a medicine, which is the lowest price for that medicine anywhere in the world. Trump clearly said that pharmaceutical companies will no longer be allowed to charge high prices in America. The government claims that 16 out of the 17 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world have agreed to this new pricing system. Under these, new medicines coming to America will also have to be made available at the same minimum global price.
What is the difference between Trump Rx and Janaushadhi?
The question arises whether Trump Rx is like India’s Jan Aushadhi Scheme? Broadly speaking, the objective of both is the same, to make medicines cheaper. But the method is different. India’s Jan Aushadhi Scheme focuses on generic medicines, which are available in thousands of stores across the country at very low prices. Trump Rx currently offers huge discounts on a limited number of branded and expensive medicines and is completely based on a digital platform. Still, the message is clear. Just as India made affordable medicines an important part of its health policy, similarly efforts have started in America to challenge the high prices of pharmaceutical companies.
Trump had warned the countries
Trump linked pricing agreements to the use of tariffs and said he had warned other countries that drug prices abroad would increase if they did not agree to lower prices for the United States. He said, ‘By doing this the prices of medicines will increase in other countries. They had to agree, and the reason they agreed was my tariff policy. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said consumers will now receive direct rebates. “Today, you can take advantage of these discounted prices,” Oz said. He urged Americans to check the site properly before purchasing medicines. Oz said, ‘One out of every three Americans is turned away by the drugstore; They cannot buy medicines. This will not happen now.
Which companies were ready?
US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia explained the intricacies of this site. He said that the site has been launched with more than 40 medicines, and medicines will be added to it regularly. In a fact sheet, the White House said the site initially includes discounted drugs from AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMDsereno, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer, and more manufacturers are expected to join. This site provides access through printable or digital coupons depending on the drug and manufacturer.
Trump had signed an executive order on May 12, 2025, directing agencies to follow most-favored nation pricing. After this, letters were sent to pharmaceutical companies and several pricing agreements were announced from September 2025. On January 15, 2026, Trump also called on Congress to enact a plan called ‘The Great Healthcare Plan’. According to the American administration, this plan is necessary from the point of view of transparency.
