To reduce obesity, many people go to the gym and sweat, while some people consume weight loss supplements seen on social media. People eat anything to lose weight as quickly as possible, but doing so can also be fatal. Recently, a case came to light from Tamil Nadu, in which a 19 year old girl searched for a recipe to lose weight on the internet. In that, she was advised to consume a chemical called Borax, after consuming which the girl died. After this, a debate has erupted on social media regarding the remedies and supplements prescribed for weight loss. Doctors have warned that no weight loss supplement should be taken without doctor’s advice. Doing this is dangerous for health.
Dr. Lokendra Gupta, head of the emergency department of Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, UP, told News18. That every month 8-10 patients come to him who consume the things suggested on social media for weight loss and gain. Many keep taking herbal supplements and when their health worsens, they come to the doctor. Most of the problems are seen in the liver and kidneys of such people. Actually, many weight loss supplements available in the market contain harmful chemicals and synthetic elements. These elements enter the body and put additional pressure on the liver and kidneys.
The doctor told that the liver filters the toxic substances of the body and the kidney cleans the blood. When there is too much pressure on them, over time these organs are unable to function properly and the risk of serious illness increases. Often people think that supplements will cause immediate weight loss, but this is just a myth. The hormones or herbal ingredients present in many supplements temporarily increase the body’s metabolism, but in the long run they harm the liver and kidneys. Apart from this, continuous consumption of some supplements can also cause increased blood pressure, allergies, vomiting and stomach related problems.
Doctor Lokendra told that to lose weight one should always adopt safe methods and take the help of a certified dietician or doctor. The most effective way for weight loss is a balanced diet and regular exercise. It is important to maintain distance from processed food, sugar and junk food. Every person’s body needs are different, hence it is mandatory to take expert advice before consuming any supplement. Relying directly on supplements can be dangerous. People need to avoid misleading claims being made on social media.
