West Indies: It has been five days since they lost to India in T20 World Cup 2026. Still the West Indies cricketers could not return home.
Calcutta : West Indies’ World Cup journey ended after a five-wicket defeat against India in the final Super Eight match of the 2026 T20 World Cup. The team has been stuck in Kolkata for almost five days after that match which was held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Due to unrest in West Asia, they are unable to return home due to restrictions on air travel.
West Indies head coach Darren Sammy expressed his frustration on social media, writing, “I just want to go home.” After a while he posted again asking for some kind of update on the situation. He wrote, “At least give an update, tell me something – what will happen today, tomorrow or next week. It’s been five days.”
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, the International Cricket Council contacted the West Indies team earlier in the week. It was informed that a chartered flight would be arranged for the team from Kolkata via London to the Caribbean Islands. However, no new information has been given since then and the team management is still awaiting an update.
Like the West Indies, Zimbabwe was stuck in India due to this crisis. The Sikander Raja-led team was in Delhi after the last Super Eights match against South Africa. On Wednesday, the ICC finally arranged for the Zimbabwean cricketers of the first round to return home.
The ICC has faced multiple travel and management issues in the process and is still liaising with various airlines to fly back the remaining players. “Zimbabweans participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 are on their way home from India after confirmation of alternative travel arrangements,” Zimbabwe Cricket said in a statement on Wednesday. Tour plans for the West Indies team are also expected to be made gradually. With South Africa out of the tournament, the ICC will also have to fix their travel schedule.
