Sanju Samson: India’s star batsman Sanju Samson has scored a total of 321 runs in five matches in T20 World Cup. But after winning the trophy, is the Indian star still in pain?
India’s wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson caught everyone’s attention with his excellent performance in the T20 World Cup. Playing as an opener in the entire tournament, he scored a total of 321 runs in five matches and won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award. His consistent performances in important matches played a major role in India winning the title.
Samson played a great innings of 97 runs off 50 balls against the West Indies in the Super Eight phase of the tournament. Then he scored 89 runs off 42 balls against England in the semi-final. In the final match too, he maintained the same consistency and scored 89 runs off 46 balls against New Zealand. He could not score a century despite coming very close to a century in all three important matches.
Many cricket analysts and ex-players have expressed disappointment after missing a hundred in these three innings. Because the number of cricketers who scored centuries for India in T20 World Cup is very less. So far only Suresh Raina has this feat. As a result, Samson had the opportunity to be the second Indian to enter the list.
But Samson himself does not take this matter seriously. According to him, even if he didn’t get a hundred, he was able to make an important contribution to the team’s victory, that is the biggest thing for him. He admitted that the thought of a hundred crossed his mind at times, but he remained focused on his plans and game. He thought about the team. Said, “Whether it’s 80 or 90, the main thing is to stay in your own process. Our main goal was to put the team first. So while taking every decision, I thought about what the team needs at the moment.”
India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also thinks the same. According to him, team success is more important than individual milestones in the team. Samson said that it was clearly stated in the team meeting that the first goal of every cricketer would be to fulfill the needs of the team. This mindset has played a major role in India’s World Cup win.
