Especially the low budget films of South Cinema have earned huge money at the box office, while many times the big budget Bollywood films proved to be flops. However, now small budget films are giving tough competition to expensive stories. For example, The Kashmir Files recently recorded a profit of 2000 per cent, which was made with a budget of just Rs 15 crore, while it collected Rs 341 crore. But one Hollywood film had registered a profit of 13,30,000 percent, many times more than Kashmir File and no other film can compare with it. And it is being said to be the most profitable film till date.
The world’s most profitable film till date: Actually, here we are talking about a low-budget horror film named Paranormal Activity made by filmmaker Oren Peli in the year 2007. It was also directed by Peli and it is a blockbuster movie. Following the example of the 1999 hit The Blair Witch Project, the film used a found footage format and was filmed entirely on amateur handheld cameras or CCTV.
The movie was made on a budget of Rs 6 lakh: The crew of Paranormal Activity and only four actors kept its budget limited to $15,000 (Rs 6 lakh as per 2007 exchange rate). After its acquisition by Paramount Pictures, the ending was changed and some post-production work was added, bringing its total budget to $215,000 (₹ 90 lakh).
The success of Paranormal Activity spawned a franchise, which saw 6 sequels and spinoffs. The total worldwide earnings of the 7 films of the Paranormal Activity franchise is $ 890 million (Rs 7320 crore), while their budget is only $ 28 million (Rs 230 crore). Again, no other franchise has such a high success rate.

Paranormal Activity also popularized the found footage genre, which was used by many independent filmmakers in the horror genre. Some examples include The Last Exorcism, Apollo 18, The Devil Inside, and the V/H/S series.

This 1999 film was made on a budget of $200,000 (Rs 85 lakh) and grossed $243 million (Rs 1045 crore) worldwide. Whereas the 2003 film Tarnation was made with a very low budget of just $218 (Rs 10,000) and it earned $1.2 million (Rs 5.5 crore). The 1972 pornographic film Deep Throat was made on a budget of $25,000 (Rs 1.9 lakh) and grossed $22 million (Rs 17 crore). This list also includes the 1977 horror film Eraser Head, which was made with a budget of $10,000 (Rs 87,000), and earned $7 million (Rs 6 crore) at the box office.
