On which issues are the talks stuck?

On the occasion of the 56th annual summit of the World Economic Forum, Trump had an exclusive conversation with Money Control. Trump has said very optimistic things about the trade deal between India and America. His statement has come at a time when the negotiators of India and America are stuck on this deal. Negotiators of both the countries are not able to move forward on many issues. This includes issues ranging from tariff rates to market access. There is disagreement between them on issues related to energy and agriculture.

How many rounds of talks have taken place so far?

When asked directly about the possibility of a trade deal between India and America, he said positive things. He said that we are going to make a good deal. India and the US have held six rounds of talks so far to create a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement and an interim arrangement to reduce mutual tariff rates. Both sides are trying to end this long standing deadlock. Talks on this possible trade deal gained momentum in February last year. At that time PM Modi had visited America. He had met President Trump. Then both the heads of government had announced ‘Mission 500’. The goal of this mission was to double the bilateral trade between the two countries by 2030.
