Health Doctors for 60+: Which doctor should one consult after 60 years? Should any kind of problem be consulted by any doctor? We should understand that after 60 years, many changes take place in the body and not everything works the same way as it does in a younger person. Therefore, we talked to Dr. Prasun Chatterjee, Head of the Geriatrician Department at AIIMS on this subject.
Dr. Prasun Chatterjee. Health Doctors for 60+ : India is a strange country in some ways. Our culture teaches us to respect our elders but in reality, as we grow older, we forget our parents considering them as outdated products. This is not the case with everyone, but in some cases when people grow old, we do not take care of them seriously. When elders fall ill, it is often assumed that why spend so much money on their medicines. The worst thing happens when we take our elders to ordinary doctors instead of specialist doctors. We don’t even know which doctor we should consult after 60. We take them to the same doctor to whom we refer them, but in this era of science, it is wrong to do so. Today we have all types of specialist doctors and different doctors are available for every age and every disease. In such a situation, should we take our elders to any doctor? To know these questions, we asked the Director of Geriatric Department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences i.e. AIIMS. Dr. Prasun Chatterjee Talked to.
Which doctor should the elderly go to?
Dr. Prasun Chatterjee told that first we should understand that as our age increases, every part of our body also becomes old. Generally, after the age of 30-35 years, the cells of the body start aging. After that she continues to age. For this reason, its effect starts appearing on our body and face. But we understand that the same doctor who treats us will be the same for our elders. It’s not like that. Dr. Prasun Chatterjee explains that first of all we should understand that today we have specialist doctors for everything. Just as doctors for children are called pediatricians, similarly doctors for the elderly are called geriatricians. For this, there is a separate study of geriatrician in which the complete physical health of the elderly is analyzed. Geriatrician doctors treat every problem of the elderly. Therefore, if the physical or mental condition of the elderly is serious or complex, then one should immediately consult a geriatrician.
In which type of problem geriatrician is necessary?
Dr. Prasun Chatterjee tells that if there are elderly people above 60 years of age living around you and they are often under stress, they have started having memory problems, have started forgetting things, they are unable to control their body, stumble and fall, do not get restful sleep, complain of constipation, then in such cases one should come to a geriatrician rather than a general doctor. Only the geriatrician doctor will assess their health carefully and give them medicines accordingly. Along with this, if the elderly have many problems simultaneously, such as high blood pressure, sugar problem, heart problem, liver problem, kidney problem etc. then in these situations also advice should be taken directly from a geriatrician.

Where to find these doctors
This question is a bit difficult. There is currently a slight shortage of geriatricians in India. Recently MP and industrialist Sudha Murthy Had raised this issue in Parliament. He had appealed to the government that our country already has a tradition of respecting the elderly, but due to the increasing population, there is a shortage of hospitals in our country for proper care of the elderly. In such a situation, there should be a separate geriatric department in every district hospital of the country. Therefore, there is a possibility that its weighting will be done soon in the coming time. Actually, geriatricians are easily available in metropolitan cities. You will find geriatrician doctors in any super specialty hospital. The country’s largest National Center of Aging has been set up separately for the elderly in the country’s largest hospital, AIIMS. Here, all patients above 60 years of age are treated by specialist doctors under one roof. The facility to show it is also easy. Similarly, you will find separate geriatricians in super specialty hospitals in metropolitan cities.
