What is the update on India-US trade talks?

Trump This comment has come at a time when trade talks between India and America are at a crucial juncture. In the year 2025, Trump surprised everyone by imposing heavy tariffs on some Indian products, but now in the beginning of 2026, the tone seems to be changing. The common goal of both the countries is ‘Mission 500’, that is, to take bilateral trade to 500 billion dollars by the year 2030. This chemistry between Trump and Modi is not just friendship, but a powerful combination of ‘MAGA’ (Make America Great Again) and ‘MIGA’ (Make India Great Again), which experts are calling ‘Mega Partnership’.

What issues are being discussed between India and America?

India and America are very close to a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). India has indicated to reduce tariffs on pulses and agricultural products imported from the US, while in return the Trump administration can open the doors to the US market for Indian steel, aluminum and IT services. Despite Trump’s ‘reciprocal tariff’ policy, his talks with India show that he does not care about India. China are seen as a strong and reliable economic alternative.

Trump has given a positive reaction regarding the India-US trade deal but has not announced the date yet. Let us tell you that in the second week of December 2025, a high-level group of American business representatives had come to New Delhi. During this, there was an intense discussion between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal and US Deputy USTR Rick Switzer.
