Sania’s ordeal
Sania Mirza met Anisha Padukone and psychiatrist Dr. Shyam Bhatt Recalling that incident of 2008, I told in a podcast, my wrist was very badly injured. I had to withdraw from the Olympics. Then I did not know that I would play three more Olympics after that. However, this is a different matter. But at that time it seemed that my life was over. The condition of my wrists was so bad that I could not even comb my hair. I couldn’t move my wrist at all. It seemed as if my tennis career would end here. I had reached that level. I felt that I had broken my parents’ dream. At that time I did not know that it was depression. I just stayed in my room for one and a half months. I didn’t want to meet anyone. She hardly met her parents either. It was a very terrible time for me. I was not able to give myself love and sympathy. Then I realized that the only way out of this stress was the tennis court. I was really happy only when I was playing tennis.

How did you overcome depression?
Sania told that tennis court itself became medicine for her. Only when she slowly returned to the field and accepted herself mentally, she came out of that darkness. This message of Sania Mirza can prove to be very helpful for those people who are not able to recognize their depression and due to this their life is going through many crises.

Whatever difficulties you are going through in life, be they emotional or any other kind, if you are successful then you are flowing in the same flow. That means your emotions flow according to what you are doing. This is why high-functioning people often recognize depression too late. Existential analyst and organizational psychologist Gurleen Barua told The Indian Express that many high-functioning people struggle with mental health issues, but their efficiency often hides it. They even hide it from themselves. In fact, when a person is continuously performing well, giving results, winning matches and getting applause, there is very little scope left to look inward. Then life gets stuck in a fixed routine and the attention becomes completely focused on external achievements. Because everything appears to be going well from the outside, emotional pain is accepted as normal or avoided. With time the mind learns to keep itself busy instead of being aware. But by then the pain has already deepened.
