Dakshin 24 Parganas, Basanti, Suman: As the saying goes, “He who cooks also ties his hair”—this adage proved true once again in Ranigarh village of Jyotishpur Gram Panchayat in Basanti block of Sundarbans. People of the area have never seen the picture that was caught in the village field on Sunday. Crossing the four walls of the family and the kitchen, the women of the village went to the field to play football wearing sarees.
And for five days, they did not spend their time in housework. Instead, they played football. Many marginalized women like Bhagwati, Rakhi, Maina, Sulekha, Nilimad took to the field for the first time and enjoyed the joy of sports. There was a festive atmosphere on the field with the goal fight, running and jumping and the enthusiasm of the teammates.
Many of these women manage household, farming and family responsibilities throughout the day. Never got a chance to play sports due to poverty. But on that day they bravely entered the field and showed their strength and ability. It was clear on their faces that how much their confidence has increased through playing football.
This football match was organized by a local social organization. Ruma Sarkar, a member of the organizing committee, said that sports make women physically and mentally strong. Teaches teamwork, leadership and self-reliance. He also said that when the girls of the country can win the World Cup, the women of Sundarbans can also shake the field – this initiative is based on this belief.
There was also great enthusiasm among the spectators present in the field. The men, children and old people of the village all clap and encourage the women to play. Players Tanima Halder and Sarma Janara said that they never thought to play football in their life. This match is not just a game, but opens the way to new dreams and possibilities in the lives of rural women.
