India US Trade Deal: US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnick has made a big claim regarding the failure of a trade deal between America and India. Lutnik has said that the deal got stuck because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not call US President Donald Trump. During a conversation on the All-In podcast, Lutnick claimed that Trump himself is the leader who finalizes the deal and unless the leader talks directly, the deal will not be completed. According to him, America was assuming that the agreement with India would be reached before other countries, hence talks with countries like Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam were also done on the same basis.

Trump’s ego bigger than the deal!

Not making a trade deal because of not calling shows that the reason behind the heavy tariffs imposed by America on India was not trade differences, but President Trump’s ego. The US Commerce Minister says that when Britain’s deadline came, PM Keir Starmer himself called Trump. He said that the deal was finalized the same day and it was made public the very next day.

Lutnik said that the call was not made to Trump from the Indian side because the Indian side was uncomfortable about this matter. During this time, America quickly made agreements with other countries and their terms were fixed. He claims that India expressed its desire for talks again after about three weeks, but by then the situation had changed. He said that at that time India said that it was now ready for the deal, but by then ‘the train had left the station.’ According to Lutnik, India now wanted to change the terms that had already been agreed with other countries, and this became the biggest problem.
