Bangladesh may face punishment with respect to the T20 World Cup, Pakistan may also be under pressure if they boycott the World Cup. According to ICC rules, political interference in cricket can lead to bans from World Cups and bilateral tournaments. Such cases have happened before, such as in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Recently, the United States Cricket Board was also punished for breaking the rules.
South Africa was banned from international cricket for 22 years, starting in 1970. The ban came in response to the country’s strict Apartheid system. Under this law, introduced in 1948, all non-white South Africans were denied equal rights, even though white people (usually the wealthiest) made up only 16-17% of the country’s total population. In cricket, this meant that only white cricketers were in the national team, while players of other ethnicities could not participate in the national team or in domestic competitions.
South Africa was banned from international cricket for over two decades. Although there were some ‘rebel’ tours, they were not well watched, and the organizers paid good money to bring in players. It ruined the careers of many talented players.
After the end of Apartheid and political reforms in the early 1990s, South Africa was readmitted to the ICC in 1991.
