India’s bowling attack is largely dependent on Jasprit Bumrah – this is not new. It has also been proven time and again that India’s bowling looks relatively weak when Bumrah is not in the team or rested. Despite struggling with injuries, he has been the mainstay of the Indian bowling unit for a long time. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel also believes that Bumrah is the best pace bowler in the world right now.
While Morkel praised Bumrah ahead of the fourth T20I against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam, he also highlighted the pressure on him. Morkel said, in every match, the expectation from Bumrah is a match-winning spell. This added expectation creates pressure on a bowler for a long time. Although Bumrah handles these moments on the field very naturally, there is no denying that the pressure is there.
Pace bowlers have a tougher task in T20 cricket. A last over, a crucial wicket or a mistake—everything can change the fortunes of a match. In modern cricket, teams rely on a few reliable overs, and for India, Bumrah is the safest name in that position. But Morkel warned that over-reliance on one bowler could cause problems in the future.
This is why India is testing different bowling combinations in the New Zealand series. Apart from Bumrah, several bowlers including Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakraborty have been rested periodically. According to Morkel, this is not just about workload management, but also part of getting other bowlers used to important roles.
The Indian team is making this plan keeping in mind the upcoming T20 World Cup. Morkel said that the main goal is that the opposing teams cannot make specific plans against India. Using different bowlers in different situations will make the team stronger. According to him, if multiple bowlers learn to take responsibility, then the pressure on Bumrah will be reduced and India will be able to enter the World Cup as a more balanced team.
