Calcutta : Former Pakistani cricketers and board officials have urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to allow the national team to participate in the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup. According to them, while showing support to Bangladesh, Pakistan should not harm its own cricket interests or relations with the International Cricket Council (ICC).
After Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup, the PCB has postponed the final decision on participation in the ICC tournament. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has set a deadline of Friday or Monday to confirm whether Pakistan will participate.
Anger is brewing among Pakistan’s former players and administrators. They believe that it will be harmful for Pakistan cricket if it stays away from the World Cup. Pakistan’s former Test captain Muhammad Hafeez said that the PCB must send the team to the World Cup, as did former PCB chairman Khalid Mahmud and secretary Arif Ali Abbasi.
Abbasi said, there is no point in supporting Bangladesh. There is no justification for Bangladesh to pull out of the Pakistan tournament. Former batsman, chief selector and head coach Mohsin Khan also urged the PCB to prioritize national cricket. “We have problems with India, but we are playing all our matches in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq asked the PCB to consider all aspects well before taking a final decision. Inzamam said, “I personally want to see Pakistan participate in the World Cup. We have a lot of good cricketers, they have a future. It is important for cricket to see our team perform well in big events. Such a decision does not make sense for Bangladesh.”
