Easiest Way To Avoid Unwanted Pregnancy: For many years, women have been dependent on pills, injections, condoms and IUDs for contraception. But now the way to avoid unwanted pregnancy has become easy. Experts have made an invention which can be implanted in the arm and prevent pregnancy for 3 years.

Nowadays people are more aware about family planning than ever before. Till now, methods like condoms, birth control pills, injections or IUD (intrauterine device) have been commonly used. However, many women experience side effects from the pills or discomfort from the IUD, making these options difficult to pursue long-term.

How would it be if birth control was possible through a small needle inserted under the skin? Medical science has made this possible. A small implant placed in the arm can prevent pregnancy for three years. This advanced method has so far been adopted in some parts of India including Maharashtra.

What is this new method of contraception? Medically, this method is called ‘subdermal implant’. It is very small, approximately the size of a matchstick. Unlike pills or intrauterine devices, this implant is placed just under the skin near the elbow.

How does the implant work? After being placed under the skin, the implant slowly releases a hormone called progestin into the body. This hormone works in two main ways. First, it prevents the formation of eggs. Second, it prevents sperm from reaching the egg. After the implant is placed, no other contraceptive method is needed for three years.

Can fertility return after implant removal? Yes…. If a woman wants to conceive, it can be removed anytime with the help of a doctor. Natural fertility usually returns within a few days after implant removal. Unlike an IUD, there is no incision in the genital area, no implant is inserted into the uterus, and the risk of infection or discomfort is very low.

Where is this facility available in Maharashtra? This service has been started under the National Health Mission. Currently, it is available in six secondary and tertiary health centers in Maharashtra, including district hospitals and medical colleges. In future, the program is expected to be further expanded through government health centers in major cities like Mumbai and Pune.

How are implants placed? The implant is placed through a minor surgical procedure that takes only a few minutes. This should always be done under the guidance of a qualified doctor.

Subdermal implant is being seen as a revolutionary step in the field of family planning. It provides women with a safe, long-term and hassle-free option of contraception.
