January 29, 2006 is an unforgettable day in the history of Indian cricket. Irfan Pathan achieved a feat in the Test match against Pakistan in Karachi, which is still etched in the minds of cricket lovers. He created a new history in Test cricket by scoring a hat-trick in the very first over of the match. Never before has a bowler taken a hat-trick in the first over of a Test match.
Irfan Pathan started bowling with great rhythm at the beginning of the match. For the first wicket, Pakistan opener Salman Butt caught Rahul Dravid at slip. The very next ball, Mohammad Yusuf failed to understand Irfan’s inswing and was lbw. Younis Khan also failed in the third ball and was bowled. When three wickets fell in just three balls, the whole stadium came to a standstill.
As soon as the hat-trick was completed, cheers erupted on the field. Irfan Pathan was picked up by his teammates. Young Irfan’s face then had a mixed reaction of joy and surprise. Although India lost that match and the series 0–1 despite this brilliant start, Pathan’s feats transcend match results in cricket history.
This hat-trick is regarded as one of the most memorable moments of India-Pakistan Test cricket. Irfan Pathan became India’s second Test hat-trick bowler after Harbhajan Singh. Later in 2019 Jasprit Bumrah repeated this feat. This achievement of Irfan Pathan is a shining example of his talent and courage, which is still in the history of cricket.
