China’s Population Shrinks Again: At one time China had the largest population in the world, but now India is at the forefront in this matter. Despite the Chinese government continuously implementing new policies and incentive schemes to increase the population, the decline in the country’s population is not showing any signs of stopping. Experts believe that this crisis can have a deep impact on China’s economic and social structure in the coming years.

According to global media reports, the birth rate in China has reached its historically lowest level. According to official figures, only 79.2 lakh children were born in the country last year, whereas in the previous year this number was 95.4 lakh. That means a huge decline of about 17 percent has been recorded in one year. This figure is believed to be the year with the lowest birth rate since 1949, which is a serious warning for China. During this period, the total population of China has also decreased. According to the report, the population of China has decreased by 33.9 lakhs and now it has come down to 1.4049 billion. On the other hand, the number of deaths has increased to 1.13 crore, which is one of the highest levels in the last five decades.

Chinese experts say these figures reflect the limited success of the government’s family support policies and childcare subsidies. Strict population control policies implemented for decades, especially the one-child policy, have created a serious demographic imbalance in the country. Now the trend of marrying late or not marrying at all is increasing rapidly among the young generation of China. Socio-economic pressures like rising inflation, expensive homes, job insecurity, long working hours and intense competition are weakening the desire to become parents. Experts are warning that the declining youth population could put huge pressure on the job market, productivity and social protection systems in the future.

To deal with this crisis, the Chinese government has taken many big steps in the last one year. These include a maximum childcare subsidy of 10,800 yuan for each child under three years of age, better insurance coverage for delivery expenses, simplifying marriage registration and tightening divorce procedures. Although some areas have seen a slight increase in marriages, experts believe that unless affordable housing, better work-life balance, gender equality and reliable childcare are created, these policies will only slow down population decline rather than completely reverse it.
