Calcutta : Indian boxing star Mary Kom, who has been in the headlines recently for her personal life, has finally opened up about the controversy that has been brewing on social media over her comments against her ex-husband on a talk show.

The medalist, known for his restraint in and out of the ring, has come clean about the controversial comments. She said the comments were the result of long-standing emotions, a deteriorating relationship with her husband and personal problems.

Mary Kom also said that her comments were not intended to hurt the male society as a whole. The controversy started when Mary Kom opened up about her personal life in an emotional episode of ‘Aap Ki Adalat’. Her “didn’t make a dime” remark to her husband at the event went viral, which many believed was meant to belittle her ex-partner’s career and contributions.

Talking about their relationship, Mary insists that their marriage was not always a failure. She said that even after the separation with her husband, she remained silent for a long time maintaining dignity and restraint.

He said, “I want to make it clear that it is not that my marriage was never successful. Everything was fine for many years. But later when trust completely broke down, things changed. However, I want to make it clear that after my divorce in April 2025, I have never made any statement in public or in the media, even after the press release against me. I have always conducted myself with dignity and restraint.”

Much of the criticism came from sports fans, who felt his comments belittled the struggles of young footballers. However, Mary Kom quickly rejected this idea and said that she has no bias towards football. He extolled that tenacity by citing legends like Sunil Chhetri.

He said, “My comments were taken the wrong way on social media, which is really unfortunate. I am in no way against youth football, football culture or the football fraternity. I am a boxer but love football from the heart and love to play football myself. My comments were not aimed at any sport or players. Everyone starts from the streets—and those who work hard, sweat and fight till the end, become like Sunil Chhetri or Baichung Bhutia. That is who we are.” I wanted to understand. My ex-husband said, he gave up his football career. He used to play football in Shillong, but after giving up football, we met in Delhi.”
